太平洋にかかる橋
モントレー湾と南房総は、太平洋によって結ばれている同胞であり、モントレー湾と南房総の交流は、100年以上前、七浦村の住民である小谷源之助が太平洋を渡って旅した時に始まった。
1898年、小谷源之助・仲治郎兄弟とア.レクサンダー・M・アレンは、東太平洋において、初の深海アワビ潜水事業を始めた。
1898年から1940年の間、南房総のアワビダイバーの高い技術が太平洋を行き来し、それに伴い、日本・アメリカお互いの技術や文化も行き来した。
両地域の歴史学者は歴史上の関係を再発見し、モントレー湾と南房総の長きに渡る平和的関係を称えるために、2005年9月3日にシンポジウムを開催することを決定した。
このシンポジウムは“太平洋にかかる橋—南房総半島とカリフォルニア・モントレー湾を繋ぐ精神“と題され、子供たちに平和を渡すことにささげられる。
これらのことから、カリフォルニア市民を代表する、私、州務長官ブルースマックファーソンは、南房総の市民とともに、子どものために、太平洋の平和と、更には世界中の平和の促進に身を捧げることとする。

RELATIVE TO COMMENDING
A BRIDGE ACROSS THE PACIFIC
WHEREAS, Monterey Bay and Minamiboso are both on the Pacific Rim, being joined as neighbors by the waters of the Pacific Occan, and their connections began over 100 years ago when Gennosuke Kodani, a native of Nanaura Village,journeyed across the Pacific; and
WHEREAS, in 1898, Gennosuke Kodani, his brother, Nakajiro Kodani, and Alexander M. Allan began the first successful deep-water abalone diving business in the Eastern Pacific; and
WHEREAS, between 1898-1940 a steady stream of Minamiboso abalone divers traversed the Pacific, exchanging Japanese technology and culture with American innovation and culture; and
WHEREAS, historians in both places discovered these connections and dedicated a symposium to the long, peaceful relationship between Montercy Bay and Minanamiboso to be held on September 3, 2005; and
WHEREAS, the symposium is titiled “A Bridge Across the Pacific: The Spirit Connecting the Southern Boso Perinsula and Monterey Bay, California” and is dedicated to “Giving a Peaceful World to our Children”; therefore, now be it
RESOLVED, that I, Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, on behalf of the citizens of California join with the citizens of Minamiboso)in dedicating themselves to promoting peace all around the Pacific Rim and throushout the world kodomo no tame ni, “for the sake of the children”.
